Although the benefits and successes of Hypnosis and NLP are becoming more generally accepted through the work of people like Paul McKenna and Anthony Robbins, there is still a great deal of myth and mistrust around. The main reason for this misinformation is due, in the main, to the way Hypnosis has been portrayed in films and through the antics of stage hypnotists. Both of these are based around entertainment and hold very little resemblance to the work of the large majority of practising Hypnotists. So if what we think based upon the entertainment industry is incorrect, what are the facts: Hypnotism Even the name Hypnotism gives us a false clue of what the phenomenon is. Hypnos was the Greek god of sleep, which then became used as the Greek word for sleep. It was in the early 19th Century that James Braid, first coined the phrase Hypnotism after noting the anaesthetising effects of someone in trance. Prior to James Braid, Dr Franz Mesmer had done the first early work of the modern age within the area, and is why we still today use the phrase “Mesmerised” when somebody is transfixed by something or someone. Going back even further, there is evidence to show that forms of Hypnotism were being used well before the birth of Christ. But what is Hypnosis? Well different people will experience Hypnosis in different ways, but in general terms it is a relaxing, naturally occurring state of mind which happens to us every day. Each time we read a captivating novel, float off in a daydream or see an engrossing movie we are in a natural state of hypnosis. With the neuro performance practice, this state is brought on deliberately to achieve the goal of the client The most important point to make is the client is ALWAYS in control, the myth about the Hypnotist having power over the individual, is just that, a myth! NLP NLP is a relative “new kid on the block”. Created in the early 1970’s by Richard Bandler and Dr John Grinder in California, NLP or Neuro Linguistic Programming, was a bringing together of several areas, including Hypnosis and linguistics. The formal definition of NLP is “the study of the structure of our subjective experience”, it could also be described as: þ what makes you and others tick þ a toolkit of personal and organisational change þ the art and science of communication þ waking hypnotism Why are Hypnotism and NLP so Powerful To understand how Hypnosis and NLP work, it is best to imagine that there are two parts of the mind, a conscious and unconscious (or subconscious) part. Under normal circumstances it is the conscious mind that we are aware of and is the one that makes most of our decisions and allows us to make logical decisions. However the unconscious mind is the one that looks after all those things that we don’t have to think about, for example monitoring our breathing and blood circulation. It is also the home of our habits, those things we do without thinking (consciously) about. This might include smoking, biting our nails, getting nervous before doing a presentation and tensing up before a putt. Some habits are fine, but a lot are no longer good for us, even if they served a purpose at some time in the past. With Hypnosis and NLP we engineer it so that we can talk and give suggestions directly to the unconscious mind, thus going directly to the root of the issue to help you to help yourself. . |
